Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Review

The Nvdia GeForce GTX 980 is the world’s most advanced GPU. Powered by next-generation NVIDIA® Maxwell™ architecture, it delivers incredible performance, unmatched power efficiency, and cutting-edge features.

The GeForce GTX 980 is one of the most powerful video cards in Nvidia’s 900 series. For starters, it's based on the Maxwell architecture, whose primary focus is performance while also dramatically reducing power consumption also dramatically reducing power consumption.

The Nvdia GeForce GTX 980 has been around since late 2014. Since then the market has matured, with a flood of third-party cards offering increased clock speeds and new features, and the GTX 980’s original price of £430 has come down, with some versions of the GPU now available for less than £400.

Overview

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 is a high-end desktop graphics card based on the second generation Maxwell architecture. The GM204 chip is manufactured in 28 nm at TSMC. Compared to the older GeForce GTX 780Ti, the 980 offers similar performance levels but at reduced average power consumption. The similarly named NvidiaGeforce GTX 980M for notebooks is based on the same chip, but uses less shader cores and slower clock speeds for reduced performance.

The Geforce GTX 980 supports a range of unique features like CUDA, 3D Vision, PhysX, GeForce Experience, GameStream, GPU Boost 3.0, Adaptive Vertical-Sync / G-Sync, SLI, DSR, MFAA and Virtual Reality latency improvements.

KEY FEATURES

  • 1,126MHz core clock
  • 4GB 7,010MHz GDDR5 memory
  • 5.2 billion transistors
  • 2,048 stream processors
  • Requires 2 x 6-pin power connectors
  • Manufacturer: Nvidia

Positive And Negative Impacts Of GTX 980

Pros

  • Breezes through 1080p and 1440p games
  • Handles most 4K titles
  • More efficient than rivals

Cons

  • A little slower than R9 390X
  • Strong competition from two AMD cards

System Suggestion

GeForce GTX 980 4GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.

Power Consumption

With a rated board TDP of 165W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with two 6-pin connectors.

Gpu

It equips a GPU codenamed GM204-400-A1 which has 16 SM activated and thus 2048 Shader Processing Units, 128 TMUs and 64 ROPs, on a 256-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1126MHz and goes up to 1216MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Game Suggestions

  • Watch dogs 2
  • Dishonored 2
  • Call of Duty Infinite Warfare
  • Titan Fall 2
  • BattleField 1
  • Mafia 3
  • Fifa 17
Some of the most top rated games in 2016 and they pretty much all of them have a 4k resolution now not gonna lie tested the GTX 980 at 4k on all of these games and well the fps gets pretty low so I’d recommend you play them at ultra resolution the difference isn’t that much and they run smoothly without a single lag. If you’re a gamer and got a good budget I prefer this card for you.

Verdict

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 is a capable card with the grunt to handle anything at 1080p and 1440p and almost all games at 4K, too. However, AMD’s two rivals offer performance improvements for similar cash. If you want to stay green, the GeForce GTX 980 is a good option – but be aware that other GPUs are better for speed.
